Regional Workshop on International Trade in Services Statistics

DATE AND VENUE

21 - 25 November 2016

Jolly Beach Resort and Spa, Bolans, ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

OVERVIEW

The Workshop was conducted as part of the CARICOM Project – Support to the Forum of Caribbean States in the Implementation of the Commitments undertaken under the Economic Partnership Agreement (Services Sector Development Component 5). The Project was funded by the European Union (EU) under the Tenth European Development Fund (10th EDF).

The objective of the Project was to provide the decision makers in CARICOM with core, high quality statistics for the establishment and monitoring of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). The main focus was to strengthen the capacity to measure the sectoral contribution of international trade in services to the economies of Member States by trading partners.

The results of the Project were reviewed during the Workshop, specifically –

  • the testing of the questionnaire for the collection of trade in services statistics by trading partners in the six (6) pilot countries that had volunteered, namely, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Suriname;
  • the training, at the national level, in the collection of more detailed data on services in accordance with the latest international standards; and
  • the compilation of foreign affiliate statistics (FATS).

The harmonisation of the capacity-building activities in the pilot countries and the sharing of the best practices and lessons learnt in the compilation of International Trade in Services Statistics were major concerns of this regional Workshop.
