Caribbean Week of Agriculture launches Friday
The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas will be hosting the 17th Caribbean Week of Agriculture from 9-13 October 2023, at the Breezes Resort and Spa, Nassau, under the theme ‘Accelerating Vision 25 by 2025′.
The Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) is the region’s premier agricultural event that features seminars; statutory meetings of regional agriculture organisations and other key forums, including a special meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED); and a trade show.
A ceremony to launch the CWA will be held 10 am on Friday, 1 September, and will be publicized on the CARICOM Secretariat’s social media platforms. The event will feature President of Guyana, His Excellency Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who will deliver the feature address. President Ali is the lead Head of Government with responsibility for agriculture in the CARICOM Quasi Cabinet and is spearheading the Region’s 25 by 2025 initiative which aims to reduce the Caribbean’s high food import bill by 25 per cent by 2025.
Remarks will be delivered by the Hon. Clay Sweeting, Ministry of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs, The Bahamas; Dr. Carla Barnett, CARICOM Secretary-General; Dr. Manuel Otero, Director-General, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA); Mr. Mario Lubetkin, Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); and Mr. Regis Chapman Representative and Country Director, World Food Programme (WFP). CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General, Economic Integration, Innovation and Development, Mr. Joseph Cox, will present an overview of the CWA. Ms. Milagro Matus, Deputy Programme Manager, Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Development, CARICOM Secretariat, will moderate the hour-long programme.
CWA was last held virtually in 2021.
