Omicron Threat Prompts Policy Reversal in Antigua and Barbuda

(ABSTV/Radio) Antigua and Barbuda will no longer accept rapid antigen tests for entry into the country commencing next Wednesday, the 8th of December.

This reverses the government’s decision, which allowed the rapid tests from November 17.

The policy reversal comes in response to the new COVID variant Omicron, which scientists say could be more transmissible than other strains.

Considering the threat, Cabinet says it is treading cautiously to ensure the safety of all.

Scientists say Omicron’s several mutations could help it escape immunity from previous infection or vaccination.

Information Minister Hon. Melford Nicholas also says the government will continue to monitor the global situation to determine whether to move forward with plans to lift the state of emergency on December 23.
